Every child deserves the opportunity to learn in a safe, welcoming and supportive classroom. However, many children with disabilities and special educational needs still face barriers to education in Cameroon.
At ITCIG-SENTTI, we believe that better learning environments can help remove these barriers. Therefore, we introduced the Inclusive Classroom Brick Project in Cameroon, also known as the Pound Brick Project.
The initiative aimed to improve educational facilities while supporting the training of inclusive and special education teachers.
What Is the Pound Brick Project?
The Pound Brick Project was developed by ITCIG-SENTTI, an inclusive special educational needs teacher training institution in Bamenda, Cameroon.
Our institution focuses on preparing teachers to support children with different abilities, backgrounds and learning needs.
However, providing effective teacher training also requires suitable classrooms, accessible facilities and practical learning resources.
For this reason, the project proposed expanding our educational facilities through a community-supported construction initiative.
The idea was simple: encourage people to contribute towards the cost of building materials, one brick at a time.
Our Original Classroom Construction Goals
At the time of the project, ITCIG-SENTTI operated from temporary rented premises. Although construction work had already begun, the institution needed additional facilities.
The original plans included:
- Six additional classrooms for teacher training and learning.
- Four additional accessible toilets.
- A multimedia resource room to support educational activities.
- Improved facilities for students with different learning needs.
These developments aimed to create a more comfortable and inclusive learning environment.
Furthermore, the additional space would help the institution strengthen its teacher training activities.
Why the Project Needed 20,000 Bricks
The original construction proposal identified a requirement for approximately 20,000 bricks.
Each brick had an estimated contribution value of £1. Therefore, the campaign set a building-material target of £20,000.
The original fundraising proposal also included an additional £1,000 to cover the crowdfunding platform’s estimated charges.
As a result, the overall fundraising target was £21,000.
These figures describe the project’s original 2017 proposal. They do not represent a current fundraising appeal or confirmed construction costs.
Nevertheless, the project’s underlying message remains important. Small contributions can support meaningful improvements when communities work together.
Why Inclusive Classrooms Matter
An inclusive classroom welcomes learners with different abilities and educational needs.
Rather than separating children unnecessarily, inclusive education encourages participation, understanding and appropriate individual support.
For example, some pupils may need adapted teaching materials. Others may benefit from additional guidance, accessible facilities or different learning activities.
Therefore, teachers must understand how to respond to each learner’s circumstances.
Suitable classrooms also play an important role. Accessible facilities can help children participate more comfortably in everyday school activities.
Moreover, an inclusive learning environment encourages friendships, cooperation and respect among pupils.
Supporting Special Education Teacher Training in Cameroon
The Inclusive Classroom Brick Project in Cameroon was closely connected to ITCIG-SENTTI’s wider educational mission.
Our institution works to strengthen inclusive teaching through professional preparation and practical learning.
In particular, the Cameroon Inclusive Special Education Teacher Training Empowerment Programme (CISETTEP) forms part of the institution’s approach to developing teaching skills.
Through inclusive teacher training, educators can learn to identify barriers and respond to different educational needs.
They can also develop strategies that encourage participation, confidence and independence.
Consequently, better training facilities can benefit both student teachers and the children they eventually support.
Helping Children With Disabilities Access Education
Access to quality education remains an important challenge for children with disabilities and special educational needs.
Some families experience difficulties finding schools with appropriate facilities or trained teachers.
Additionally, limited resources can affect the support available to individual learners.
ITCIG-SENTTI aims to address these challenges through inclusive education and teacher development.
Our approach recognises that every child has unique strengths and needs.
For this reason, teachers should receive practical preparation that helps them adapt lessons, communicate effectively and encourage participation.
Better educational facilities can support this work by providing appropriate spaces for training and learning.
Strengthening Families and Local Communities
The benefits of inclusive education extend beyond the classroom.
When children receive suitable support, families may feel more confident about their educational opportunities.
Similarly, teachers can share practical guidance with parents and carers.
Communities also benefit when schools encourage understanding and challenge misconceptions about disability.
Furthermore, inclusive education helps children learn alongside peers with different experiences and abilities.
These interactions can encourage empathy, cooperation and stronger relationships.
The Pound Brick Project reflected this wider ambition. Its purpose was not simply to construct buildings, but to support educational inclusion.
The Importance of Community Support
The original Pound Brick Project encouraged individuals, organisations and well-wishers to take part in improving educational facilities.
Its £1-per-brick concept demonstrated how collective support could contribute towards a larger goal.
However, successful educational development requires more than construction materials.
Institutions also need trained teachers, suitable resources and ongoing community involvement.
Therefore, meaningful progress depends on cooperation between educators, families, supporters and local organisations.
By working together, communities can help create learning environments that respect individual differences.
Our Continuing Commitment to Inclusive Education
Although the Pound Brick Project began as a specific construction initiative, its educational purpose reflects ITCIG-SENTTI’s broader mission.
We believe children should have access to teachers who understand their learning needs.

We also recognise the importance of appropriate facilities, practical training and community awareness.
Above all, inclusive education should give every learner a fair opportunity to participate and develop.
The Inclusive Classroom Brick Project in Cameroon illustrates how infrastructure and teacher training can work together to support that goal.
Through education, cooperation and continued commitment, we can help build more inclusive learning opportunities for future generations.
